Opinion: Chinese are optimistic about the future of democracy in their country because they understand the concept differently
"The purpose of democracy, as seen by many Chinese, is to make the state strong so that it can better provide for the common well-being of the people and the nation as a whole," writes Bruce J. Dickson. "It is not a way to hold leaders accountable through elections, limit the state’s authority in order to protect individual rights and freedoms, or adjudicate between competing interests."
