Understanding China gets more difficult as the nation’s restrictions on foreign reporters become the worst in decades, according to a report from PEN America

o understand the challenges faced by the roughly 700 foreign journalists working in China, PEN America, a writer's group based in New York, surveyed more than three dozen of them as well as local Chinese employees of overseas outlets. "There have been times when it was better but also times when it was much, much worse," said one journalist who has worked in the country for decades.
