Haier, a Chinese giant in the electronics and appliances industries, embraces open innovation to go from a manufacturer to an internet platform supporting outside ‘micro-enterprises’

o help transform into a platform-based company, Haier has embraced open innovation, which forgoes the closed, secret and slow approach of traditional research and development in exchange for a faster, cheaper and collaborative process that openly shares problems with a wide audience in order to find a partner who can provide the best solution. Its Haier Open Partnership Ecosystem, much of it open to the public, has 370,00 registered problem solvers, and has helped address a consistent issue with refrigeration.
