Cultural traditions and the poverty of China’s rural life may explain the nation’s highest rate of suicide being found among women in the countryside
In 2009, approximately 500 women took their lives each day in China, which is the only country in the world where the female suicide rate is higher than the male. The problem is especially acute in rural areas, where pressure to marry before age 30 and a feeling of powerlessness once betrothed can be overwhelming for many young women.
