Artists flock to a tiny town an hour outside Beijing in search of lower rent, following the lead of art schools and famous artists pouring more resources into that location

anjiao has a population of 300,000 — a quite small town in Chinese terms — and used to be known as a "sleeper city" used only for commuter lodging. Now, with the establishment of a satellite campus of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and potentially hundreds of artists' studios, including that of the famous Gao brothers, it has quickly become a hub for young artists from Beijing's top art schools.
