rump’s calls for more fossil fuel extraction and coal burning, appointment of a climate change denier to head the transition team for the Environmental Protection Agency, and promise to pull out of multiple international climate-related commitments are “a massive blow to the already-slim possibility of keeping global temperature from rising more than 2° C above pre-industrial averages — the threshold for preventing irreversible damage.” China, meanwhile, remains heavily invested in climate policy, which it sees as “central to the global agenda.”
