A perm with red-hot tongs

Wang Weimei, age 74, in southwest China’s Sichuan Province, has been using fire-heated tongs to perm hair for customers for more than 30 years.

This type of perming tool was popular in the 1980s in China.

It is now rarely used in the country.

This hairstyle made with tongs can last for up to three months.

Customers pay less than a dollar for the hot perm.

Wang says the technology should be passed on to the next generation…

…and he adds proudly that he has never burned any of his customers.
