BAIC BJEV isn’t exactly a household name. A subsidiary of a subsidiary of state-owned BAIC Group (Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co., Ltd.), it is perhaps better known by the two brands it places on its cars: ARCFOX, a high-end EV marque offering the αS and αT, and BEIJING, which sells mainstream models dubbed EU, EX, and EC.
BAIC BJEV has struggled to compete in China’s congested electric vehicle market, posting declining sales and production (down roughly 50% and 70%, respectively) over the course of 2021. But it’s pursuing two avenues of growth with help from tech giants: Huawei, whose level-3 self-driving ARCOX αS HI is slated for launch in Q4 2021, and Baidu, whose technology will power a fleet of 1,000 level-5 self-driving “Apollo Moon” robotaxis, slated to launch in the next three years.
