Founded in 2000 by Robin Li and Eric Xu in a Beijing hotel room, Baidu (meaning “hundreds of times” or “hundred degrees,” taken from a famous Song dynasty poem) took advantage of the nascent ad revenue model early on to quickly become the leading search engine in China.
In 2005, Baidu listed on NASDAQ and in December 2007 became the first Chinese company to be included in the NASDAQ-100 Index. After developing an artificial intelligence unit (“Baidu Brain”) in 2010, Baidu has gone from a search engine to “an AI company with strong internet foundations.” Baidu provides the full AI stack – AI chips, deep learning framework, and all core AI capabilities. With nearly a billion devices accessing Baidu monthly, it has established a firm leadership position in the Chinese market (78%) and succeeded in fending off global search engine powerhouses Google, Yahoo, and Bing.
In addition to search, Baidu offers a whole suite of apps and other features including maps, news, video, anti-virus software, internet TV, and even autonomous driving vehicles. After a falling stock price and loss of top talent had investors worried about Baidu, it has become clear that the company is staking its future success on the value of AI.
Baidu (NASDAQ: BIDU) went public on August 5, 2005 on the NASDAQ exchange at a price of $27 per American depositary share (ADS), valuing the company at USD $3.96B.

Baidu Sanctions
While at this time it appears that this company is not the subject of any U.S. or other global sanctions, it is important to note that Chinese companies tend to have more opaque organizational structures than their Western peers. Chinese companies' affiliated brands, operating units, and overseas subsidiaries are not always obvious or even identifiable. Given this, a Chinese company may not be the subject of sanctions, but one of its subsidiaries may be, thus making it difficult to accurately ascertain a company's full sanctions status.
When asked "Which other Chinese tech companies are you looking at banning from operating in the United States," such as Baidu, Trump answered:"We’re looking at other things. Yes, we are. We are," according to the White House press briefing on August 15, 2020.
