One of the biggest after-school tutoring firms in China, TAL (“Tomorrow Advancing Life,” previously named Xueersi) was founded in 2003. By 2020, it had grown to over 45,000 employees and 990 teaching centers in 110 cities. It offers K-12 small group classes, premium one-on-one services, and online courses including core academic subjects and competency-based programs.
In 2010, TAL went public on the NYSE at $2.75 per share. Its price peaked at over $90 in February 2021, months before collapsing by over 93%. The cause: China had abruptly banned for-profit tutoring on K-12 subjects — which made up 80% of the company’s revenue — essentially forcing TAL to become a non-profit or pivot to new businesses, such as test prep and after-school child care.

TAL Sanctions
While at this time it appears that this company is not the subject of any U.S. or other global sanctions, it is important to note that Chinese companies tend to have more opaque organizational structures than their Western peers. Chinese companies' affiliated brands, operating units, and overseas subsidiaries are not always obvious or even identifiable. Given this, a Chinese company may not be the subject of sanctions, but one of its subsidiaries may be, thus making it difficult to accurately ascertain a company's full sanctions status.
TAL Reputational Disclosures
TAL Education in April 2020 announced it had found an employee who had “wrongly inflated sales” of an educational program in its internal audition, noting the employee forged contracts and other documents. The company earlier in 2018 was accused of inflating profits and misleading the public by Muddy Waters.
